HALL OF FAME 2011 FOR PAT MCGEENEY

The recipient for the prestigious Gerry Watters Hall of Fame Award 2011 is Mullaghbawn’s Pat McGeeney. This special memorial was put forward by the family of the late Gerry Watters, Bard committee member who passed away two years ago. This year it will mark the outstanding contribution to the Bard Festival by the great Pat McGeeney.
McGeeney’s incredible record in the competition speaks for itself:
1997 – Third. ‘One Loo will do’
1998 – Winner of the Electrical Section ‘Getting in the Light’
1999 – Winner ‘Half a bed to let’
2000 – Second ‘If I had to do the whole thing again’
2001 - Second ‘The Present’
2002 – Winner ‘The Wedding Invitation’
One of the great emotive moments in the whole history of the Bard competition was that special November night in 2002 when just after being crowned winner, word came through from Dublin that his illustrious son Kieran had been named as GAA player of the year.
An commanding reciter with irresistible appeal, his poems are always superbly composed and presented with precision and perfect timing ensuring that his audience journeys with him. His battles with his old bardic sparring partner Patsy O Hagan are legendary in the early years of the competition. So on Friday 18 November the McGeeney family will be special guests of honour at the eighteenth Bard Finals.
